A concert celebrating the life and legacy of the late Jo Ann Perkins of Denison and benefiting the Jo Ann Perkins Memorial / NAACP Scholarship Fund at Grayson College is set for Saturday, Sept. 23, 6 p.m., at Faith Church of Sherman. A reception will follow. The concert is a joint partnership between Faith Church, Daniel House of Deliverance and Temple of Hope, Faith & Grace; each of Sherman, Greater Coffey Memorial Church of God In Christ and Mount Vernon Baptist Church, both of Denison and the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church “Sounds of Victory” Young Adult Choir of Dallas, TX. The concert is free and open to the public. Love offerings will be taken for the scholarship fund.
Serving as Master of Ceremonies for the evening of musical Praise and Worship will be the Rev. Ricky Sommers. Music will be performed by the music departments of the churches hosting the concert. Individual selections will be presented by the Rev. Ricky Sommers Sr. of Sherman and Sis. Charita Brown-Howard with Praise Team (formerly of Sherman and daughter of Councilman Rev. Charles Brown). All the singers and choirs will also join together to sing a contemporary gospel song as a finale before the benediction.
Ms. Perkins, a lifelong resident of Denison, was an active community advocate and served many years as the president of the Grayson County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She strongly believed that education was the key to a better life and worked to create opportunities for young people to attend college. Following Ms. Perkins’ death in 2013, a scholarship fund was created to honor that dedication and to ensure that future generations will benefit from her advocacy of education. The initial $10,000 endowment for the scholarship was given by Barrett Keith Brown and Roger D. Sanders of Sanders, O’Hanlon & Motley, P.L.L.C. The recipient of the 2017 scholarship was presented to Miss Nayla Tew at the Sherman Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance and the Grayson County NAACP Unity Banquet in August.
